Las Palmas de Gran Canaria confronts cyber violence against women in the classroom

The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council Office for Equality has entrusted Opciónate the development and implementation of a training and awareness program on gender-based cyber-violence aimed at young people in primary and secondary schools in the island’s capital.

Young students from forty primary and secondary education schools in the island’s capital will be the recipients of this initiative to educate on ways to identify sexist behaviours and related legislation, also analysing their own behaviour, and learning how to react and report.

Opening of digital embassy in Gran Canaria where users can obtain a cyberpassport accrediting positive responsible practices on social media platforms.

Organization Opciónate has launched a digital certificate accrediting responsible online citizenship which can be obtained by completing a questionnaire.
Over forty students and teachers have contributed to the design of the project and campaign, an initiative that also includes the making of a video and an online forum where new ideas can be shared.

Youth for a Democratic Cyber citizenship

Between January and April, with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria Citizen Participation Unit.
Thirty students from Gran Canaria will have the opportunity to participate in a project where they will become agents of democratic cyber citizenship, an initiative by Opciónate Mejora tu vida Mejora el mundo with the support of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria Citizen Participation Unit aimed at promoting social and political engagement among young people with a focus on gender equality and rights.

Webinar ‘Good practices. An approach to cyber violence against women and girls’

From 14 to 18 December via zoom with the support of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.

The Deputy Director of the Spanish Agency for Cooperation and Development will participate in the event, as well as activists from Crete,Mexico, the Canary Islands and mainland Spain.

The conclusions of ‘Gender-based cyber-violence’ webinar hosted by Opciónate with the support of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council point out the need for visibility, and the gathering of data to produce statistics and achieve better training and information. They also stressed the importance of improving a very fragmented and inaccessible legal framework, allocating more specialized resources to assistance and support and, above all, learning from good practices and creating cyberfeminist networks to raise awareness and build resilience from within.
