The project “Careizenship and Digital Ethics” continues Opciónate’s commitment to fostering social improvement in and through the online world.
The organization Opciónate (Improve your life and improve the world) is deepening its work on the social improvement opportunities offered by new technologies through the project “Careizenship and Digital Ethics: New Ways of Being, Belonging, and Participating in the Online World.” The initiative aims to promote an ethical, participatory, and responsible form of digital citizenship—one grounded in care—among primary and secondary school students in Gran Canaria.
This initiative by Opciónate is funded by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the call for grants to promote citizen participation and strengthen associations, managed by the Citizen Participation Unit of the Department of the Presidency. The program is aimed at foundations, associations, federations, confederations, and non-profit entities on the island.
The project builds on Opciónate’s previous work in recent years around digital education, youth participation, and the prevention of cyberviolence. Through a practical and participatory approach, it promotes the development of an active digital citizenship committed to coexistence, equality, and collective well-being.
Opciónate starts from the premise that, in a context where technologies and social networks are an essential part of daily life, it is vital for young people to learn how to navigate digital environments with critical thinking, respect, and awareness of their rights and responsibilities.
The project focuses on two main areas: providing guidance to primary and secondary schools in implementing the educational program “Being, Belonging, and Participating in the Digital Era” (also developed by Opciónate), and conducting participatory sessions with students, teachers, and families on topics such as digital ethics, responsible technology use, and online participation.
Special emphasis is also placed on the dissemination of educational materials and content related to digital citizenship and digital care, as well as on promoting the concept of “careizenship”—which integrates self-care, respect for others, and protection of the digital environment as the foundation for coexistence online.
The project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). It also supports the priorities of the Canary Islands 2030 Agenda, focused on equality, education, and digital transformation.
Through this initiative, Opciónate reaffirms its commitment to promoting an ethical and participatory digital education, while empowering young people to play an active, conscious role in building fairer, safer, and more inclusive communities—both online and offline.
