Students and teachers from four educational centers are fine-tuning the educational tool “Being, Being, and Participating in the Digital Age.”.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. May 6, 2024. The vision and contributions of more than 150 students from four secondary schools in Gran Canaria and eight teachers have made it possible to update and further adapt to educational needs the guide “Being, Being, and Participating in the Digital Age.” This guide was developed by the organization Opciónate to contribute to the development of ethical, participatory, and feminist digital citizenship among the island’s youth with this educational material.
The initiative is part of the project “Citizen Participation, Ethics, and Values in the Digital World,” funded by the Citizen Participation Unit of the Gran Canaria Island Council, attached to the Ministry of the Presidency of the Island Institution, as part of its grant applications.
The publication includes a teaching proposal using a participatory and experiential methodology aimed at secondary school teachers, although the content can be adapted for primary and high school levels. To prepare for each session, participants can also access presentations for each topic, worksheets, dynamics, and evaluation sheets on the content for students in the subject of Civic and Ethical Values Education.
The work continues the work carried out by Opciónate in this area and has benefited from the collaboration of four educational centers on the island, which have decisively contributed to ensuring that the training proposal meets the needs of the island’s student population. Specifically, the IES Alonso Quesada, IES Santiago Santana, IES José Zerpa, and CEIP Galicia participated through various meetings and advisory sessions.
The fundamental objective is to strengthen critical thinking, digital care, and rights in the use of technology, as well as to promote social participation at the local and global levels through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), with a cross-cutting perspective of gender equality.
The project “Citizen Participation, Ethics, and Values in the Digital World” is designed to deepen knowledge about digital ethics and cybercitizenship in the educational community. Activities have also included the review of the guide and its materials and the dissemination of the final proposal to society as a whole through various formats and information and dissemination channels.
Likewise, it is aligned with the Canary Islands Agenda 2030 in several of its priorities, including equality in diversity, a community-based approach, education for equality and closing the gender gap, the fight against gender-based violence, health, digital transformation, global social justice, sustainability, and the construction of increasingly inclusive societies.
The resulting educational materials, as articulated in the previous experience, can be viewed and downloaded free of charge from the organization’s official website www.opcionate.com in the Materials section.
