Ana Lidia Fernandez-Layos and Experts Address Gender-based Cyber Violence in a Crucial Debate on Online Violence
Opciónate joined the #MujeresConectadas Meeting, a crucial initiative organized by the digital newspaper Canarias Ahora to address gender-based cyber violence faced by women. Ana Lidia Fernández-Layos Fernández, director of Opciónate and coordinator of the Service of Prevention and Attention to gender-based cyber-violence of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, highlighted the worrying prevalence of gender-based cyber-violence among adult women, revealing that more than 50% of the cases reported to the Insular Service of Gender-based Cyber-violence affect women over the age of 18.
The meeting counted with the active participation of Fernández-Layos, along with content creator Ceci Wallace and gender and video games expert and ULPGC researcher Nira Santana. During the panel discussion, moderated by Jennifer Jiménez, the experts discussed crucial issues related to gender-based cyber violence and the urgent need to take action against this form of violence.
The event is part of the prevention strategy of the Insular Service for the Prevention and Attention to Gender-based Cyber-violence, funded by the Canary Islands Institute of Equality of the Canary Islands Government and the Department of Social Policy, Accessibility, Equality and Diversity of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria. It also had the support and presentation of the third vice-president and councillor for Social Policy, Accessibility, Equality and Diversity of the Cabildo, Isabel Mena, who highlighted the importance of tackling gender-based cyber-violence as an integral part of gender’s equality fight.
