Description:
On October 16, 2026, Opciónate participated in the conference “Feminist Challenges in the Face of Artificial Intelligence”, held in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. The event provided a space for dialogue and knowledge exchange, bringing together experts from different fields to examine the social, ethical and legal challenges of artificial intelligence from a feminist perspective. The conference opened with institutional remarks by David Hernández Díaz, Equality Councillor at Puerto de la Cruz City Council, and featured contributions from professionals specializing in law, philosophy, sociology, communication and human rights.
The event highlighted the importance of creating spaces for discussion and debate that help us critically understand how emerging technologies affect our relationships, rights and opportunities. Artificial intelligence is not neutral. It can reproduce and amplify gender stereotypes, inequalities and misogyny present in society, enabling new forms of digital violence. Sharing experiences, knowledge and diverse perspectives is therefore essential to identifying risks, exchanging good practices and developing collective responses.
Ana Lydia Fernández-Layos, director of Opciónate, took part in the expert roundtable “Digital Violence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Risks, and Responses”, alongside other experts. During the discussion, she emphasized the need to strengthen prevention, digital education, legislation and technology platforms’ accountability to address AI-enabled violence, particularly forms of abuse affecting women, girls, boys and adolescents.
The exchange between professionals from different disciplines made it possible to approach these challenges from a comprehensive perspective, bringing together knowledge and proposals to help build safer, more equal and human-rights-based digital environments. The discussion also stressed the importance of involving families, educational centres, public authorities, technology companies and civil society in preventing violence and ensuring protection and redress for those affected.
We would like to thank Puerto de la Cruz City Council, through its Department of Equality, Oxia Potencial, and the Puerto de la Cruz Municipal Women’s Centre for organizing this event and creating such a valuable space for knowledge exchange and collective debate on the challenges of artificial intelligence from a feminist perspective. Dialogue between experts, institutions and civil society organizations is essential to challenging inequalities, raising collective awareness and translating reflection into concrete prevention and protection measures.
Through its participation in this conference, Opciónate reaffirms its commitment to promoting critical digital citizenship, preventing gender-based violence and defending the rights of women and girls. The organization advocates for artificial intelligence that places equality, dignity, social justice and people’s well-being at its core.
